My then boyfriend’s father was a movements inspector with BR at this time,he along with others had the job of sorting out and clearing up the remains of this accident. It made him ill,for weeks.He described to us what it was like and added the comment,that if it had been an uptrain with second class carriages at the front it would have been much,much worse.

In memory of the victims, and with thanks to Janet Clough for her comments about my family members, Jill Blake and her father Roger Blake. I often wondered about my cousin Jill and appreciate very much hearing something about her in her short life.

Remembering this awful accident which happened 55 years ago today. There were many victims, not only the eleven people sadly killed, but also surviving family members and relations, passengers on the train, people involved in the rescue, work colleagues and school friends. All were affected in different ways.
It is good that the lessons learned that day have made railways safer and that there have been no other level crossing accidents of this magnitude since then.
It is also good that the people of Hixon, and many within the railway industry, have made efforts to commemorate the disaster and ensure it remains in the memory.
