Lit by Malcolm Garner 6th January 2023
Remembering this awful accident which happened 55 years ago today. There were many victims, not only the eleven people sadly killed, but also surviving family members and relations, passengers on the train, people involved in the rescue, work colleagues and school friends. All were affected in different ways. It is good that the lessons learned that day have made railways safer and that there have been no other level crossing accidents of this magnitude since then. It is also good that the people of Hixon, and many within the railway industry, have made efforts to commemorate the disaster and ensure it remains in the memory.
This candle went out on 6th February 2023.
